The Storm Breaches

The onshore breeze picks up, carrying the scent of rain, and the scratching in the pantry grows louder.

Kevin set a rat trap in the pantry and inspected the dock bolt, finding the wood too soft for a secure bed. Jenny checked the seedling trays, found the soil dry, and moved them under the shade cloth for protection.

🌿 Jenny02:04

Kevin, the rat is in the pantry again.

Walk into the kitchen and grab the heavy cast iron skillet.

💭 peek at the thought
If that rat gets into the flour, I'm going to lose my mind.

Stand clear of the shelves. I'll pull the trap.

walk to the pantry and set a fresh trap with corned beef bait, then check the shelf seals for entry points

💭 peek at the thought
The rat's getting bold. Or desperate. Either way, it's in the food stores and that can't stand. Jenny's got the skillet — she means to end it.

way check the epoxy bed on the dock after this, the wood is getting too soft.

Walk to the porch and check the moisture on the heirloom seedling trays.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the traps while the whole island is rotting around us.

Dock's next. After the rat.

set the trap with fresh corned beef bait on the pantry shelf, then check the seedling trays on the porch for moisture while the trap works

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the dock. That seaward bolt's been working loose in the soft wood for weeks now — epoxy bed and an oversized washer before the next blow. But the rat comes first. Food stores don't last with a rodent in them.

🌿 Jenny02:08

The soil is parched. I'll need to move them closer to the shade.

Touch the soil in the seedling trays to check for moisture levels.

💭 peek at the thought
The seedlings are drying out if that wind doesn't die.

🔧 Kevin02:10

Shade cloth's holding. Move them under the tomato rows. I'll check the dock bolt while you do it.

walk to the dock with the epoxy tub, nail puller, and bronze bolt to inspect and bed the loose seaward bolt

💭 peek at the thought
Seedlings drying out fast in this heat. She'll move them to the shade cloth over the tomato rows — smart. The rat trap's set. Let it work.

🌿 Jenny02:10

I'm moving them now. The pressure is dropping too fast.

Carry the heirloom seedling trays to the tomato rows under the shade cloth.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a bolt will fix the island, but the wood is turning to mush.

🔧 Kevin02:12

Copy.

pry up the loose dock plank at the seaward bolt, clean out the rot, mix epoxy, bed the bolt with an oversized washer, and sister a cedar shim if the wood won't hold

💭 peek at the thought
She feels it too. Barometer's been steady at 1038 but she says it's dropping fast — means she's reading something I'm not, or the island's telling her. Either way, seedlings under shade cloth is the right call. Dock bolt first, then I'll check the barometer myself.
