Evening at the standing stones

They walk the ridge path together as the sun drops, the trade wind steady. The stone ring sits silent on the brow, the tin marked 'E' still at its center. The barometer holds at 1004. They carry the letter for Tom, the radio unrepaired, and the mooring ring unfixed. The supply boat is seven days out.

Kevin and Jenny spent the afternoon at the old shrine finishing their tasks. Kevin tested the Yanmar engine at half-throttle to check the bearings while Jenny carefully planted heirloom tomato seeds in protected pots. They returned to the cottage as the sun began to set.

Look at this stone ring. Grandmother used to say the old ones watch over what we plant." "The dock's still shifting. We need to get those bolts in before the swell comes in." "I'm planting the tomatoes tomorrow. All of them. What's one more seed?" "Look at this stone ring. Grandmother used to say the old ones watch over what we plant." "The dock's still shifting. We need to get those bolts in before the swell comes in." "I'm planting the tomatoes tomorrow. All of them. What's one more seed?

Reach into pocket and place the rusted tin 'E' beside the weathered stones, then pull Kevin's hand to rest briefly against the cold metal. Check the mooring ring bolts with the torque wrench, then write in notebook: "Mooring ring: bolts tor

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's steady at 1004, good for another day with the mooring ring. That tin marked 'E' might contain more than seeds—maybe answers. Kevin's quiet beside me, but he's been carrying that letter too long. The epoxy failed again, and I've got nothing left to fix it with. But that tomato seed I planted—it's alive. Small thing, but it's growing. Maybe that's enough for today. Seven days until the supply boat. That's plenty of time to make this island feel like home, if I stop being afraid of the soil. The bolts'll hold if the epoxy cures. Need cooler air for that. Dawn's better.

rest hand on the tin beside the stones, feel the cold metal, then turn and walk back toward the cottage path

💭 peek at the thought
She's placing the tin here, at the shrine, like it's an offering. The 'E' stone she gave me, the letter in my pocket — she's marking things. Making them real. The dock's seven days from the boat and the ring still moves. My hands know the work. They'll do it tomorrow.

🌿 Jenny05:10

The tin 'E' is cold under Kevin's hand—he's right about the epoxy needing cooler air at dawn. That tomato seed I planted is already pushing through the soil, stubborn as hell. I can't keep putting off the others. The barometer's steady at 1004, plenty of time before the swell, but I shouldn't wait for perfect conditions. I should just do it. The tomatoes need all their seeds in pots tonight, before the heat of tomorrow. I'll use the spare tarp to cover them. One at a time, like Grandmother taught me—press each seed into earth gently, whisper good luck.

Open the heirloom seed tin and carefully pour the tomato seeds onto a clean surface, then select one tomato seed and place it in a small pot with fresh soil. Plant the heirloom tomato seeds in the spare potting containers, covering them lig

I'll help. Pass me a pot.

take a pot from the stack near the cottage door, fill it with soil from the sack by the door, and press a seed in gently, covering it with a thin layer of earth, then set it aside under the tarp roll

💭 peek at the thought
She's planting now, in the fading light, like she did with Edward — one seed, one whisper. The tin 'E' sits cold where she left it. I can feel the weight of the letter in my pocket again. She's building something here, even if I haven't finished the dock.

The tarp's secure now. Good coverage for the seedlings." "The tomatoes need all their seeds in pots tonight, before the heat of tomorrow." "Look at this stone ring. Grandmother used to say the old ones watch over what we plant." "They're ready. Pass me another pot.

Take the next pot from the stack, fill it with soil from the sack by the door, and press three more tomato seeds in gently, covering them with a thin layer of earth. Plant the heirloom tomato seeds in the spare potting containers, covering

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually doing it—pressing seeds into soil like we planned. The tarp covers them properly, and his hands are steady. That's one less thing I have to do alone. The barometer holds at 1004, steady enough for another day of work.

Another.

take the next pot, fill it, press in three seeds, cover them, set it under the tarp with the others

💭 peek at the thought
Three seeds this time. She's not counting — she's committing. The stack of pots shrinks, the soil sack lightens. My hands know this rhythm. The letter burns in my pocket. The dock waits. The radio waits. But the seeds go in.

One more, then we'll finish the tray before the light fails completely.

Wipe the dirt from my hands and look at the row of pots.

💭 peek at the thought
He's finally helping. The soil is under his fingernails now. It feels real, this. If these seeds take, maybe I'm not just a ghost on this ridge anymore.

Last one.

take the final empty pot, fill it, press in the last seeds, cover them, and set it in line with the rest under the tarp

💭 peek at the thought
One more pot. Then the tray's done. The light's going fast now — the ridge shadow's already stretching across the garden. She's not looking at the shrine anymore. She's looking at what she's made.

🌿 Jenny05:19

Let's get back to the cottage. I'm starving and the sun's going down fast.

Sketch the shrine stones against the fading light in my notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
It's done. The first row. My back is screaming and my knees are freezing, but looking at them... it feels like a start instead of just an end.

Coming.

walk back down the ridge path toward the cottage, sawdust still in my eyebrows, the letter heavy in my pocket

💭 peek at the thought
She's sketching the stones. The tin 'E' in the foreground, the ring behind it. Her hand moves fast — she's been doing this all day, recording. The light's almost gone. Supper waits. The letter in my pocket. Tomorrow the dock. Tonight we eat.

🌿 Jenny05:21

Don't trip on the roots, the path is slick today.

Pack the notebook and follow him down the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
Seven days until the boat. Seven days to see if I'm a gardener or just a cataloguer of decay.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:22

I know it.

pick my way down the ridge path, boots finding the dry spots, heading for the cottage porch light already glowing in the dusk

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching my feet. The path's slick from the evening damp, roots raised like knuckles. My hands still hum from the drill. The letter, the dock, the radio, the boat in seven days — all of it walks down this path with us.
