Evening shelter from the storm

You meet on the porch as the first heavy drops of rain hit the tin roof.

The air pressure dropped steadily as the clouds thickened, signaling an approaching storm. Kevin and Jenny struggled in the garden to secure the heirloom seedlings with the heavy-duty tarp, but the rising wind made it difficult to anchor everything before the first heavy drops began to fall.

🔧 Kevin23:26

Radio's no good. Insulator's gone, coax is shot. Couldn't raise a whisper.

lean against the porch post, watching the rain stripe the garden beds

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the ankle still. The radio's dead weight in my pack. Sky's closing down proper now.

🌿 Jenny23:27

I'll check the connections when the light holds. Right now, we need to cover these seedlings or they're drowned.

Wince as I shift my weight off my' ankle, gripping the doorframe for balance.

💭 peek at the thought
Another failure. The island is eating the equipment and I'm running out of ways to fix it.

🔧 Kevin23:28

I'll get the shade cloth roll. You sit.

turn and walk back into the cottage toward the porch storage corner

💭 peek at the thought
She shouldn't be moving on it. Not with that swelling. But she'll argue if I say it.

🌿 Jenny23:29

Just make sure it's weighted down. The wind is going to catch it.

Sink onto the weathered wooden bench, letting my swollen ankle hang out while watching the sky turn a bruised purple.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks sitting will fix the world, but the rain is already soaking into the soil.

🔧 Kevin23:31

Got rocks and line ready.

grab the heavy-duty shade cloth roll from beside the generator, haul it out onto the porch, and start unrolling it toward the garden beds

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the wind. Gusts already hitting the ridge. The extra roll's by the generator.

🌿 Jenny23:31

Use the heavy stones for the corners. The wind is picking up from the ridge.

Push myself off the bench with a sharp hiss of pain through my teeth, limping to the edge of the porch to watch.

💭 peek at the thought
If that cloth catches a gust, it'll rip the stakes right out of the earth.

🔧 Kevin23:32

Stay off it. I'll sort the corners.

unroll the shade cloth over the tomato and basil rows, then jog up to the garden wall to collect the heaviest flat stones for the corners

💭 peek at the thought
Stubborn. She'll make it worse. But the corners need weight and I've only two hands.

🌿 Jenny23:33

Watch the edges, Kevin! The wind is going to lift the plastic.

Lean heavily against the cedar post, watching the first heavy drops thud into the dust.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast on that slick stone. He's going to take the fall I did.

🔧 Kevin23:34

Yep.

sprint back to the beds, throw the cloth over the seedlings, and pin each corner with a heavy stone from the wall, then run a length of rope along the windward side and peg it down hard

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's already snapping the loose edge. Need to move.

🌿 Jenny23:35

Get inside. It's really coming down.

Limp toward the door, clutching my ankle as the wind howls through the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
It's holding for now, but the pressure is dropping too fast for this to last.
