Evening Prep
The sun begins to dip, and the temperature drops only a few degrees. You meet on the porch to plan the meal from the remaining limpets and sea beet.
Kevin tests the dock mooring ring by putting load on the dinghy to ensure the new doubler plate is secure. Jenny rests at the cottage, managing the swelling in her ankle while the humid air thickens overhead.
We need to boil the limpets longer this time, or the salt from the beet will ruin the whole pot.
Lean heavily against the porch post, propping my swollen ankle up on a crate to reduce the throbbing.

Rinse the beet in two changes. Cold water first, then the hot off the kettle. Limpets go in once it's rolling. Twenty minutes, lid on.
Walk into the kitchen, fill the big pot from the rain tank, set it on the wood stove to heat. Grab the colander and the bucket of limpets from the porch.

I'll get the beet. Just make sure there's enough grit off those limpets first.
Sit heavily on the porch chair, rubbing the ankle wrap while reaching for the sea beet.

I'll give them a hard scrub under the tap. Two changes of water for the beet, like you said. Then we start the pot.
Take the bucket of limpets to the sink, run fresh water over them, and scrub each shell with the stiff brush, paying attention to the ridges where grit hides. Rinse twice.

Don't overcook the limpets. If they get rubbery, I can't stomach them.
Peel the sea much leaves with shaky fingers, wincing as a sharp pain shoots through my calf.
