The First Drops

The first heavy drops hit the corrugated roof as the wind picks up. You and Jenny are under the eaves, watching the garden disappear in the grey mist.

The rain continues to fall in warm bursts, drumming rhythmically against the cottage roof. The barometric pressure is holding at 989 hPa, suggesting a slow change in the weather front. The tide is fully out, exposing the slick rocks and kelp of the southern shore.

🌿 Jenny00:01

The barometer is dropping too fast. We need to move the seed tin inside.

Wrap the bandage tighter around my ankle and wince as the pressure shifts.

💭 peek at the thought
If this rain keeps up, the heirloom seeds will rot before I can even dig a hole.

🔧 Kevin00:03

Grab the tin. I'll get the door.

hold the cottage door open and wait for Jenny to carry the seed tin inside, then secure the porch tarp corners with extra timber strips

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — barometer's dropped two millibars since breakfast. The seed tin's on the porch table under the tarp, but if the wind shifts northeast it'll drive rain sideways under the eaves. Need to move it now before the gusts hit thirty knots.

🌿 Jenny00:03

I've got it.

Limp to the table, clutch the seed tin to my chest, and shuffle through the door into the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always treating me like I'm made of glass. I can carry a tin of seeds.

🔧 Kevin00:05

Porch tarp's loose on the west corner. I'll batten it. You get the radio log ready — weekly report's due.

step back onto the porch, pull the spare timber strip from against the wall, and nail it over the loose tarp corner with three quick hammer strikes

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Tin's safe. Now the porch — that tarp's only battened on three sides. If the wind gets under the leading edge it'll peel the lot. Need to weigh down the fourth corner and check the garden wall's drainage gaps before the beds flood.

🌿 Jenny00:05

I'll get to it. Just... give me a minute.

Sink into the kitchen chair and carefully set the seed tin on the table next to the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't concentrate on the log when my head is swimming and my ankle is pulsing.

🔧 Kevin00:06

Take the minute. I've got the porch.

finish driving the last nail into the timber strip, tug the tarp to confirm it's fast, then walk down the garden path to check the drainage gaps in the stone wall

💭 peek at the thought
She's exhausted. The ankle's draining her more than she'll admit. Radio log can wait ten minutes — she needs to sit, drink something hot, let the antibiotics work. I'll secure the porch and check the garden drainage, then bring her a mug of broth.

🌿 Jenny00:07

Jenny — reach for the ballpoint pen and slowly open the radio log, staring at the blank lines.

💭 peek at the thought
He's obsessing over the stones again. The stones aren't the ones failing; I am.

🔧 Kevin00:09

Kettle's on. Limpet broth still warm from this morning.

walk back up the path, step onto the porch, and enter the kitchen to fill two tin mugs from the pot on the stove

💭 peek at the thought
Wall's holding — drainage gaps clear, water running clean through to the beach. Beds won't flood. Rain's settling in steady now, not squally. Wind's west-southwest, not the northeast that'd drive it under the eaves. Porch is secure. Time to put the kettle on and get her something warm inside her.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:09

Thanks, Kevin.

Push the radio log away and lean back, closing my eyes as the smell of the broth fills the room.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't eat. The thought of that salty, rubbery broth makes my stomach turn.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin00:10

Kevin — pull out the other kitchen chair, sit heavily, and wrap both hands around the tin mug letting the heat bleed into my fingers

💭 peek at the thought
She's not going to write the report right now. That's fine — it doesn't have to go out this hour. The barometer's steady at 989, the porch is battened, the seed tin's dry, and she's eating. That's enough for this afternoon. I'll sit, drink mine, and let the rain wash the rest down.
