afternoon at the cottage

Kevin arrives at the cottage from the dock, tools in hand, finding Jenny on the porch easing herself into a chair with her ankle propped. The kettle is on the stove. The sky is flat grey, cloud cover thick, and the barometer reads 982 hPa steady. They have a few hours before the supply boat window opens.

The rain has turned into a heavy squall, drumming against the cottage roof and soaking the island earth. The tide is high, water lapping aggressively against the lower stones of the dock. Inside, the air is thick with the smell of damp wood and drying sea beet.

🔧 Kevin13:05

Transom's holding. Sister plank seated. Mooring ring's next — mortise is soft, needs oak wedges driven deep and a steel doubler plate if the through-bolts'll bite.

set tools on porch rail, pull out chair opposite her, sit heavily

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slower than yesterday. The descent from the cliffs took something out of her. Kettle's already on — she beat me back. Good.

The dock can wait an hour. I need to eat before I can even think about looking at the ring.

Reach for the tin of corned beef on the table, fingers trembling slightly, and grab the can opener.

💭 peek at the thought
He's talking about wood and bolts while I'm rotting from the inside.

🔧 Kevin13:07

I'll grab the corned beef. Keep the ring under the table, come on. I’ll get the wedges while you eat.

walk to kitchen, pull the corned-beef tin from the table, open it with the can opener, place the sliced beef on a plate, bring plate toward Jenny, then turn back to the porch to start working on the mooring ring.

💭 peek at the thought
She still can’t get to the ring until her stomach is settled. I’m in the kitchen, but she’s on porch. The dock’s still fine, but the ring might shift later if I don’t fix it now.

🌿 Jenny13:07

Thanks. way... don't force the wedges too hard yet.

Take a bite of the cold beef, struggling to swallow against the nausea, while watching the rain hit the stone wall.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's doing something, even if the silence between us is still heavy.

🔧 Kevin13:09

Wedges go in gentle. Tap, check, tap. Steel plate's the real hold. Bolts bite into that, not the rot.

lean the 19mm wrench against the porch post, pull the oak wedges from my pocket, set them on the rail beside the doubler plate, then fetch the kettle and pour two mugs — one black, one with the last of the powdered milk — set hers on the ra

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the rain instead of the food. Nausea's still there. Antibiotics hitting hard or the infection fighting back. Either way — she needs calories down before she can think straight.

🌿 Jenny13:09

I can't walk down there yet, Kevin.

Wrap both hands around the warm mug, leaning back into the chair and closing my eyes.

💭 peek at the thought
He remembers how I take my coffee. It's the only thing he's getting right today.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin13:11

Alright. I’ll take the wedges and plate down myself. Keep an eye on the ring from here. If it shifts, I’ll feel it in the line.

stand, tuck the plate of corned beef under one arm, grab the oak wedges and steel doubler plate with the other hand, step off the porch toward the dock, moving slow over the wet stones.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s done. The mug’s warmth is the only thing holding her upright right now. Dock can wait — her body’s saying no.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny13:11

Be careful. The stones are slick.

Take a slow sip of the coffee, the steam hitting my face, and watch his back go into the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
The dock is going to give way if he isn't careful with that wood.

🔧 Kevin13:13

Kevin — pause at the top of the dock ramp, test the first stone with boot weight, adjust grip on the plate, descend steady — one hand on the piling line, feet finding the worn grooves — reach the mooring ring, crouch, run fingers over the mortise g

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching. Good. Means she's still tracking. Stones are slick — I know. Been on them every tide for eleven months.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny13:13

Watch the gap in the stone.

Lean forward, elbows on knees, ankle throbbing in time with the rain watching him work the ring.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast. The wood is soft as wet paper.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin13:15

Seen it. Deeper than yesterday.

drive the first oak wedge into the gap at the mortise heel, tap it home with the wrench handle — solid bite — second wedge opposite, third beside the first, fourth crowning the top — ring locks up, zero play — set the steel doubler plate ov

💭 peek at the thought
She sees it from up there — the gap where the mortar washed out. Good eye. Means she's still reading the structure even flat on her back.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny13:15

Get the bolts tight. Don't overtighten them.

Take another bite of corned beef, salt hitting the tongue, and wait for the sound of the metal on stone.

💭 peek at the thought
That's it. For now. The rot is still eating the wood underneath.
