A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Jenny sits in the armchair, her ankle propped up on the chair as she watches the clouds darken over the sea. The incision on her leg is clean and packed with gauze and honey, though the throbbing remains a dull, persistent heat. The coffee in the mug is still warm, and the smell of antiseptic and salt hangs in the air of the cottage.

🔧 Kevin14:09

Coffee's on the stove if you want it. I'll check the seed trays after.

Walk to the kitchen, lift the kettle off the wood stove, pour two tin mugs of hot water, set one on the porch rail beside Jenny's sketchbook.

💭 peek at the thought
The cottage porch feels cooler under the flat sky. My hands still smell of diesel and salt from the dock work. The drill bit's jagged hole in the mortise nags at me — it'll need a proper re-drill before the supply boat comes, or the ring will work loose again. Jenny's on the porch with her sketchbook. Her ankle's bad. I should've gone with her to the cliffs, but the Yanmar wouldn't wait. The barometer's steady at 983. That's something.

🌿 Jenny14:09

Don't touch them yet. They aren't ready.

Reach for the mug, wincing as the movement pulls at the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is still dropping, and the air feels like wet wool. He's worried about the trays while my leg is literally rotting.

🔧 Kevin14:11

Mug's here when you're ready. Let me look at the ankle first.

Set the mug down on the porch rail, crouch beside her chair, reach for the first aid kit on the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
She's protecting the seedlings like they're the last thing standing between us and nothing. The wince goes straight through — I've seen her move like that before, when the infection first took hold. Coffee can wait. The trays can wait. Her ankle needs the poultice changed and the antibiotics downed.

🌿 Jenny14:11

Be careful. It's sensitive.

Peel back the bandage to reveal the red, angry skin.

💭 peek at the thought
It's throbbing again. If I can't get the heat out, I'm not going to walk to the ridge again.

🔧 Kevin14:13

It's tracking. We need to open it again. Cleaner this time.

Pull on clean gloves from the first aid kit, soak gauze in the cooled boiled water from the kettle, gently wipe around the wound edges to see the full extent.

💭 peek at the thought
The redness tracks up from the puncture wounds — angry streaks following the lymph. Heat radiating off it. The antibiotics should've knocked this back by now. Either the dose isn't enough, or the bug's resistant, or the debridement yesterday didn't get deep enough. My gut says the last. I should've pushed harder to clean it proper.

🌿 Jenny14:13

Use the saline. The water is too hot.

Grip the edge of the armchair, knuckles white.

💭 peek at the thought
The red is moving up my shin. If it hits the knee, I'm calling the boat for real.

🔧 Kevin14:15

Saline it is. I'll flush it slow.

Open the saline packet, pour it gently over the wound to rinse away surface debris, then use tweezers to lift any visible pus or dead tissue at the edges.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — hot water'll cook the tissue, make it worse. Saline's the only thing we've got that won't burn. The packet's low; one strip left after this. I'll have to make more from the rain tank if we need it. Her grip on the chair tells me the pain's sharp. She's not screaming, but her breath's short.

🌿 Jenny14:15

Okay. Just... watch it.

Breathe through gritted teeth, eyes fixed on the floorboards.

💭 peek at the thought
The pain is a white noise. I can't let the seeds rot while I'm stuck in this chair.

🔧 Kevin14:17

I'm going to open the track. Let it breathe. You tell me to stop, I stop.

Take the scalpel from the first aid kit, flame it over the stove burner for three seconds, make a shallow 5mm incision along the reddened track to release the pocket, then flush with the remaining saline.

💭 peek at the thought
The wound weeps yellow-green when I press the edges — deep pocket, not draining clean. The antibiotics aren't reaching it. I need to open the track with the scalpel, let it drain, pack it with gauze soaked in saline and honey if we've got any. She's holding herself rigid, not making a sound. That's the worst kind.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:17

It's open. Keep it out.

Let out a sharp, shaky breath as the pressure shifts.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat is releasing, finally. If the infection doesn't break, I won't be able to get to the garden.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin14:19

Packing it now. Honey on top. You'll want the foot up on the rail.

Soak clean gauze in saline, pack the wound cavity gently but firm, smear a thin layer of honey over the opening, cover with dry gauze, tape the edges down without pulling tight. Hand her the mug of coffee.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Pus draining slow and thick — means the pocket was walled off, antibiotics couldn't touch it. The relief in her breath says the pressure's dropping. Now pack it open so it heals from the bottom up. Honey's in the cupboard, half a jar. Saline gauze first, then honey on the top layer, dry gauze over that. Tape it loose. She'll need the leg elevated and the next antibiotic dose in two hours.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:19

Thanks. I'll just stay here for a minute.

Lean back against the stone, propping the ankle on the chair, and watch the clouds dark over the sea.

💭 peek at the thought
The relief is momentary, but the heat is still there. I need to check the way again before the storm actually hits.
