Evening on the porch

Kevin and Jenny sit on the porch as the generator winds down. The rain has eased to a mist. The shortwave crackles with static. Jenny's ankle is propped on a cushion; Kevin has a tin mug of limpet broth. The supply boat is due in six days.

The heavy humidity of the wet season clings to the cottage as the tide recedes. Kevin has spent the afternoon struggling with the shortwave radio, frustrated by the persistent interference despite his repairs, while Jenny focused on meticulously inspecting the heirloom seed packets, fearing the slow creep of mold in the damp air.

Boat's due in six. Barometer's holding. Generator gave us a full charge.

💭 peek at the thought
Six days. Generator's charging, tank's full, epoxy's setting in the mooring ring. If the barometer holds, the boat makes it. If it drops four millibars in six hours, it doesn't. Jenny's pencil line hasn't moved past the knee in two hours. That's something.

I need to check the seed tin again. If the humidity holds, the heirloom varieties are lost.

Sketch the morphology of the sea beet leaf in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
Six days is a long time for an infection to stay stable if the red line doesn't move.

They're dry, Jen. Stove's been running. Cloth's bone dry.

set the empty mug on the porch rail, wipe hands on thighs

💭 peek at the thought
She's been checking that tin every few hours. Humidity's brutal — 29 degrees and the air's thick enough to drink. But the seeds have been drying by the stove for days. Wrapped in dry cloth, warmest spot. If they were going to rot, they'd have done it by now.

🌿 Jenny03:41

I know. I just need to see the packets for mold.

Open the heirloom seed tin and inspect the packets for moisture damage.

💭 peek at the thought
If the seeds are dry, I might actually have a chance once this leg stops eating me.

🔧 Kevin03:41

Take your time.

lean back against the porch post, watch the mist thin over the water

💭 peek at the thought
Let her check. It's the only thing that settles her — having eyes on it herself. The Cherokee Purple, the Brandywine. She labeled every packet like she was filing engine parts. Her hands were steady then. They're steady now, too, even with the fever gone and the ankle still angry.

🌿 Jenny03:43

I'm not sure.

Carefully lift the seed packets from the tin and lay them on the dry newspaper to check for dampness or rot.

💭 peek at the thought
If they're damp, I've wasted my grandmother's whole life on paper.

What do you see?

shift weight, boots scraping the porch boards

💭 peek at the thought
She's hesitating. That's not like her. Usually she knows — viable or not, move on. But these aren't just seeds. They're the garden she talked about for eleven months while I built walls and fixed engines and let the weeds win. The sensory garden. The life we'd make. She's holding the proof of whether any of it was real.

🌿 Jenny03:45

They look dry for now, but I need to check the corners.

Inspect the lettuce-seed packets for any hint of mold or dampness.

💭 peek at the thought
The paper feels stiff, but the edges aren't yellowed yet.
