The Storm Breaks

The rain is now drumming against the cottage roof as the wind howls through the radio mast bracing.

The air is heavy and humid as the flat sky darkens to a bruised purple. Kevin and Jenny retreat inside the cottage as the wind picks up, the barometer dropping to 988 hPa. The tide is far out, exposing the slick rocks of the shore, but the rising pressure of the storm makes any work on the tide pools impossible.

🌿 Jenny21:22

Kevin, get inside right now! The tide is already too high!

wrap my ankle in a dry cloth and move the seed tin to the highest shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; if the water gets into the pantry, the seeds are lost to rot.

🔧 Kevin21:24

Right behind you.

grab the crowbar and the spare warp from the porch, head for the dock at a fast walk

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's higher than I've seen it. Wind's shifting southwest — that'll drive water straight up the channel. The south piling's already moving. If the mooring ring lets go, the dock goes with it. Need to check the dinghy lines and the generator lashings before the porch floods.

🌿 Jenny21:26

Don't go for the warp! Just come in, Kevin!

limp to the window to watch him fight the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get knocked out in the swell; those planks are slicker than ice.

🔧 Kevin21:26

Two minutes. Checking the bow line and the generator lashings. Then I'm in.

move along the dock hand-over-hand on the gunwale line, staying low, checking the dinghy bow cleat and the generator ratchet straps on the porch roof

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The swell's breaking over the dock planks. If a timber shifts underfoot, I'm in the water with forty minutes of Bay of Biscay in my chest. But the dinghy's our way off this rock if the cottage goes. The stern spring's doubled but the bow line's single half-inch — if that parts, she swings broadside into the pilings.

🌿 Jenny21:28

way the generator! The barometer is at 988 and falling, just move!

grab the sea beet poultice and press it to my throbing ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If that wind catches the artworkhy, it'll tear the moorings out and drift into the north cliffs.

🔧 Kevin21:28

Generator's fast. Bow line's chafing but she'll hold the spring. Coming in.

move fast along the dock line, step onto the porch, shoulder the door shut against the wind, latch it hard

💭 peek at the thought
Generator's lashed. Bow line's holding but chafing hard on the chock — one more tide like this and it'll saw through. No time to reeve new line. The dinghy'll ride to the stern spring and the doubled warp if the bow goes. That's the best I can give it. She's right. Time to move.

🌿 Jenny21:30

You're a stubborn idiot. Get those clothes off before you freeze.

lean against the wall and let out a long, shaking breath.

💭 peek at the thought
He's soaking wet and shivering; he'll track salt and grit all over the floor.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin21:30

Yeah. Stubborn idiot. You're the one stood on a broken ankle in a gale waiting for me.

peel off the soaked oilskin and wool layers, hang them on the porch hooks, pull the dry sweater from the hook by the stove, sit on the floor and pull the kettle toward me to light the burner

💭 peek at the thought
She's shaking. Ankle's bad, she's been on it all day hauling tarp and seed tins, and she still came to the door to haul me in. The cottage feels small with the wind screaming outside. My hands are numb.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:32

The barometer is dropping fast. It's going to be bad.

sit on the stool and watch the water start to boil.

💭 peek at the thought
He's shivering as much as I am. The wind is screaming through the stone gaps.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:32

It'll blow through. Always does.

spoon coffee into the two tin mugs, set them on the stove shelf to warm, check the shortwave aerial lead where it passes through the wall — tape's peeling but the insulator's holding

💭 peek at the thought
988 and falling hard. Southwest wind backing west by morning — that'll put the full fetch on the south beach, straight at the cottage. The shutters are battened. The tank's full. We've got wood, tinned food, antibiotics for her ankle. The radio's working. The dinghy's as ready as she'll ever be. We've done what we can.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:34

It doesn't always blow through without taking something with it.

reach for the antibiotic blister pack and pop a tablet.

💭 peek at the thought
"Always does" is a dangerous way to live on an island. He doesn't see the red line on my leg or the way the sky looks like a bruise.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin21:34

No. It doesn't.

pour the boiling water over the coffee grounds in the mugs, let them steep, push one across the table toward her, sit opposite with my own mug wrapped in both hands

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the dock. She's talking about the letter in my pocket. The one from Tom. The evacuation offer. The trust cutting losses. She knows I haven't shown it to her.
