Evening at the shrine

Kevin and Jenny walk the ridge path together as the light thins. The ring of weathered stones appears ahead, the carved initials faint in the dusk. A tin of beans rests on the central slab, washed up since the last visit. The air is still and heavy, the barometer unchanged at 975 hPa.

Kevin and Jenny meet at the old shrine as the sky thickens and the humidity rises. They discuss the failing radio and the approaching storm while the supply boat is still eight days away. The high tide is lapping against the rocks, making the tide pools inaccessible for now.

🌿 Jenny05:02

Is that from the tide? Is it sealed?

Pick up the tin and wipe the grit off with my sleeve.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is growling, and he found a tin—I hope it's not just salt water.

🔧 Kevin05:04

Corned beef. Seal's clean. We'll boil the tin ten minutes to be sure.

walk over to the central slab and take the tin from Jenny, turning it in my hands to check the seam and pressure-test the lid with a thumb

💭 peek at the thought
Tin's ridged — corned beef, not beans. Seal looks intact but salt crust on the lid means it rode the surf. Could be from the crate, could be older. Either way, protein is protein if the vacuum held.

🌿 Jenny05:05

Don't open it yet. Check for any bulging.

Lean in to inspect the top of the tin for any sign of pressure.

💭 peek at the thought
If the lid is bulged, we're done. I can't handle another night of sickness.

🔧 Kevin05:06

Flat. No bulge. Vacuum's solid.

press thumb firmly against the centre of the lid, then run a fingertip around the crimped seam feeling for pinholes or corrosion

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Botulism doesn't announce itself. Lid's flat, no give under thumb pressure. Vacuum held.

🌿 Jenny05:07

Put it in the pot. I need to get the limpets started.

Start walking toward the cottage, my legs heavy and aching.

💭 peek at the thought
Thank god. I'm so hungry I can barely think about the salt glands.

🔧 Kevin05:08

I'll fetch water. You get the pan.

tuck the tin into my coat pocket and turn toward the spring path

💭 peek at the thought
Limpets first — they'll toughen if they sit. Tin can wait in the pot while water comes up. Her ankle's bad tonight; she shouldn't be carrying the pot from the spring.

🌿 Jenny05:09

Be careful. The sky is getting too dark.

Enter the way and find the heavy iron skillet.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast. I just need to sit down by the stove.

🔧 Kevin05:10

Lantern's on the porch hook. I'll be quick.

walk down the ridge path toward the spring, placing feet carefully on the wet stone

💭 peek at the thought
Sky's bruising purple-grey, no wind yet but the pressure's holding wrong at 975. Spring path's slick with moss at the switchbacks. One bad step and I'm down for days. She's not wrong.
