MORNING on day 599

The first heavy drops of the wet season rain hit the tarp as you wake. The wind picks up, rattling the cottage.

The morning starts humid and overcast as the pressure continues to drop slowly. Jenny remains in the cottage managing the pain in her ankle while Kevin checks the structural integrity of the cottage roof and prepares for the upcoming supply boat arrival.

Morning. Storm's settling in.

check barometer and pull on oilskins

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's here proper now. Barometer was 993 and falling last I checked — that's a proper drop. Need to secure the dinghy lines first, then check the garden tarp and seedlings before the wind tears them loose. Jenny's ankle held overnight but this damp won't help it.

Check the tank lines. I'm staying put.

Sit up slowly, wincing as the weight shifts on my ankle, and reach for the water bottle on the nightstand.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast, and my leg feels like it's melting. I can't get to the spring today.

Tank lines first. You stay off that ankle.

pull on boots, grab wrench, head to back wall to inspect tank overflow and inlet pipes

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the tank — overflow pipe can backflow in heavy rain if the outlet clogs. Her ankle's still bad; she shouldn't be moving around in this. Tank lines first, then dinghy, then garden. Order matters.

Don't take long. Look for leaks near the float.

Reach for the first aid kit on the shelf, pulling out the sterilized scalpel and the bottle of iodine.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't debride this now, the infection is going to reach the bone before the boat even shows.

Kevin — inspect tank float valve and overflow screen for silt, clear if needed, check pipe joints for weeping

💭 peek at the thought
She's changing the dressing herself. Good. Means she's mobile enough. Float valve on the tank can stick if silt builds up — saw it last wet season. Quick check, then move.

🌿 Jenny21:23

Is the tank holding? I need to clean this wound.

Peel the ankle brace off with shaking hands, exposing the angry, red skin of the infection.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is full, but my head is spinning. I need to cut this rot out before I lose the leg.
