The Ebbing Tide

The tide is nearing low water, revealing the salt-crusted crate floating in the surf.

Kevin and Jenny spend the heavy afternoon at the cottage preparing for the supply boat arrival in three days. Jenny remains mostly sedentary due to her ankle, while Kevin focuses on the final touches of the drainage project.

🌿 Jenny00:57

No, no, no...

Jenny stands up slowly, wincing as her ankle pulses, and limps to the porch to watch the waves.

💭 peek at the thought
If that's the supply boat's crate, it's three days early or it's been washed off by the surge.

I'll get the crowbar. Stay off that ankle.

walk to the garden shed, grab the crowbar, then head down the south slope toward the beach and the surf line where the crate bobs

💭 peek at the thought
She's seen the crate. Low tide's our window — water's pulling back enough to reach it without swimming. Need to move before the turn.

🌿 Jenny00:59

Be careful of the current! The shelf is still shifting!

Jenny grips the porch railing, her knuckles white, watching his silhouette disappear against the grey wall of the sea.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going out into the surge; those rocks are slick as glass and the tide is still moving too fast.

🔧 Kevin00:59

Watching the sets. Won't go deeper than my knees.

reach the wet sand at the water's edge, scan the wave pattern, time the lull between sets, then wade in sideways to the crate's bobbing position, crowbar ready

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the shelf — saw the shingle move last week. But the crate's riding high, not grounded. If I wade in at the edge of the breakers, I can hook the crowbar through the lid's hasp and let the next swell push it toward shore. Don't need to fight the current, just steer it.

🌿 Jenny01:01

Wait for the swell to die! Don't force it yet!

Jenny leans over the porch railing, heart hammering against her ribs, eyes tracking the white foam of each wave rolling toward him.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is too heavy, if a set catches him while he's anchored, he'll go under.

🔧 Kevin01:01

Counting. Seventh's coming. I'll hold.

brace feet in the shifting shingle, plant the crowbar shaft upright in the sand as a marker, watch the horizon line for the set pattern, wait for the sixth wave to break and the seventh to pass before moving in

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The sets are still pushing hard, maybe two metres face. Crate's light enough to tumble if I hook it wrong. Better to wait the lull between the seventh and eighth wave — old fisherman's count, works more often than not.

🌿 Jenny01:03

Kevin! The seventh is big!

Jenny grips the edge of the wood, her breath coming in shallow, jagged gasps as she watches the grey water rise over the crate.

💭 peek at the thought
He's standing too exposed, if that seventh hits him broad it'll sweep him out.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:03

Seen it. Holding.

stay planted, crowbar braced, let the seventh wave surge past — crate lifts, turns broadside, slides toward shore on the white water — track its drift line, wait for the backwash to suck out before stepping in

💭 peek at the thought
She's calling the set right. Seventh's a monster — crest feathering, twenty metres out and building. Crate's riding the face, lifting clean. If I hook now the tow rope'll snap tight and yank me off my feet. Let it pass. Eighth'll be smaller. Ninth smaller still. Patience.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:05

Get it! Now!

Jenny watches the crowbar hit the water, her hand flying over her mouth.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving now, if he doesn't catch it now it's gone to the reef.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:05

Lost the bar. Going for the crate direct.

lunge forward into the retreating foam, grab the crate's rusted hasp with both hands, dig heels into the sucking sand, haul it shoreward against the backwash — one hard pull before the next wave hits

💭 peek at the thought
She saw the crowbar slip. Wet hands, cold metal. The crate's riding the backwash now, sliding seaward fast. Seventh wave's suck is pulling it back out. If I lose it past the bar, the next flood tide buries it under shingle or smashes it on the north reef. Have to go after it now, before the eighth wave builds.
