Midday check and meal

Kevin returns from the garden, hands raw and clean, to find Jenny on the porch with the barometer. The tide is high, slapping the dock pilings. A simple meal of corned beef and boiled limpets waits on the table. The barometer needle has not moved.

The rain continues its steady, rhythmic drumming against the heavy-duty tarp over the cottage roof. The water tank has reached its absolute 400-litre capacity, and the overflow pipe is now steadily pouring onto the saturated foundation. The tide is high, submerging the lower edge of the south slope and making the path to the garden wall slick and treacherous with mud.

Trench runs clean. Outlet's clear. Garden wall's dry.

walk onto the porch, set mattock against the rail, wipe hands on trousers, pull out chair opposite Jenny, sit down

💭 peek at the thought
Trench holds. Outlet clear. Wall footings dry. Barometer steady at 986 rising — storm's done with us for now. She's upright, watching the needle. Good.

The pressure is still holding at 984. For now. Did you eat?

adjust the bandage on my ankle, rub the throbbing skin, look at the barometer needle.

💭 peek at the thought
He looks as tired as I feel, but at least the water isn't standing yet.

🔧 Kevin00:36

Not yet. Corned beef and limpets?

reach for the tin mug of broth, blow across the steam, take a sip

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracking the same numbers. Ankle still bothers her but she's managing it. Food's waiting.

🌿 Jenny00:37

Eat. You're burning more than you have out there.

lift the fork, take a piece of corned beef, chew slowly while watching the rain hit the stone wall.

💭 peek at the thought
He needs the salt. I'm barely holding the fork today.

🔧 Kevin00:38

Kevin — pick up the fork, take a bite of corned beef, chew, swallow, reach for a limpet

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Knees and forearms know it. Eat now, move later.

🌿 Jenny00:39

The tide is coming in fast. Check the barometer in an hour.

reach for the seed tin on the table, tracing the cold metal, wince as my ankle throbs.

💭 peek at the thought
If that pressure drops again, the seeds are going to the ridge.

🔧 Kevin00:41

Will do.

eat another bite of corned beef, set fork down, stand, walk to the barometer on the shelf, tap the glass face, read the needle

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's high now, pushing the pilings. Barometer steady means no surge coming. She's watching both. Ankle flares when she moves wrong.

🌿 Jenny00:41

It's still 984. If it hits 982, we move the tin.

lean back against the stone wall, close my eyes for a second, listen to the rain on the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
It's not moving. The air feels too heavy to breathe.
