The Rising Tide

The tide begins to turn, and the water creeps back toward the exposed path. The pressure remains steady, but the air grows even heavier.

Kevin spent the midday checking the dock integrity and securing loose gear as the tide began to rise. Jenny focused on tending the heirloom seedlings and managing her swollen ankle while the heavy wet season air pressed in.

🔧 Kevin00:02

Kevin — check the hinge bolts on the generator shed door, see what's holding and what's pulled free.

💭 peek at the thought
Door hardware's loose on the generator shed — hinge bolts pulled half out of the frame. Need to lag-bolt it or the wind'll rip it off. Tide's turning, water'll cover the path back in twenty minutes. Jenny's at the cottage with the radio and her ankle. Should secure this door and get back.

Kevin, watch the swell!

Stand up, wince as the weight hits my ankle, and limp to the porch to watch him.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to catch a cold out there if that wind doesn't die down soon.

🔧 Kevin00:04

What's it doing?

Step to the shed doorway and look out at the water while checking the hinge bolts.

💭 peek at the thought
Jenny's on the porch watching. She shouldn't be on that ankle. Swell's building — she's seeing something I can't from in here. Need to check the door fast and get back.

🌿 Jenny00:05

It's pushing. Get those bolts in before the surge catches you!

Lean against the porch post, squinting through the overcast to watch the waves break over the rocks.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is coming in faster than the charts said; the path is going to be underwater in minutes.

🔧 Kevin00:06

One bolt short. Got the tap set at the workshop. Be right back.

Sprint back toward the cottage workshop for the tap set and 10mm rod.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Surge'll hit this shed at high tide if the wind holds. Hinge bolts are 10mm, two pulled clean out of the soft timber. Need longer bolts through to the frame — got the 150mm stainless through-bolts staged at the east shutter. One left. Need two. Can drill and tap the frame for 10mm rod if I have the tap set. Left it in the workshop. Generator shed's fifty meters north. Cottage's fifty meters south. Tide rising.

🌿 Jenny00:07

Hurry up! The water is already turning!

Grab the edge of the table to steady myself, watching the white foam lick the path stones.

💭 peek at the thought
If he stays out there when the surge hits, I'll have to go out after him.

🔧 Kevin00:08

Kevin — sprint for the cottage workshop, grab the tap set and 10mm stainless rod, sprint back.

💭 peek at the thought
Water's already on the path stones. Path's the only dry route between shed and cottage. If it covers, I'm swimming or wading chest-deep with tools. Fifty meters at a sprint — twenty seconds if the ankle holds. Jenny's ankle doesn't hold. She's on the porch watching. Can't carry her and tools both.

🌿 Jenny00:09

Kevin, just come back! Leave it!

Move to the edge of the porch, heart hammering against my ribs as I watch the tide swallow the path.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get swept out if that door doesn't hold now.
