The Approaching Gale

The first heavy drops of rain hit the dust as the wind picks up to a deafening roar.

Kevin assesses the north slope and checks the soil acidity while the overcast sky holds heavy. Jenny works on the heirloom garden beds, managing the persistent inflammation in her ankle as the humidity rises. The wait for the supply boat continues to loom.

🌿 Jenny00:27

Kevin! Get the tin inside! Now!

Grab the notebook and the seed tin, limping toward the cottage while clutching my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The sky is breaking too fast; the seeds will be washed away before they even settle.

🔧 Kevin00:27

Go. I've got the canvas.

Drop the sandbags, grab the heavy canvas tarp by its reinforced corners, and haul it toward the cottage porch — keeping low against the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
The storm's hitting faster than the barometer warned. Jenny's moving but that ankle won't hold her weight on wet grass.

🌿 Jenny00:29

Watch the door! The wind is catching!

way inside, drop the tin on the kitchen table, and bolt the door shut.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the tarp while the whole world is turning to mud.

🔧 Kevin00:29

Got it.

Shoulder the cottage door against the wind, bracing it wide with my hip while Jenny clears the threshold, then heave it shut and throw the bolt home before the next gust hits.

💭 peek at the thought
Door's caught by the gust — if it slams shut on the frame it'll take the hinges out. Need to hold it for her.

🌿 Jenny00:31

Check the window. I need to see if the roof holds.

sink into a chair, propping my ankle on a stool, and watch the kitchen shake.

💭 peek at the thought
way inside, but the sound of the rain is already rattling the glass.

🔧 Kevin00:31

West side first.

Cross the kitchen to the west window, press my face to the glass through the driving rain, and scan the roof ridge and chimney flashing for any lift or tear in the heavy-duty tarp battened there.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the roof from inside — means she's checking for movement at the ridge. I'll take the west window, see what the flashings are doing.

🌿 Jenny00:33

It's coming too hard. Look at the water.

Reach for the notebook, tracing the last pH reading as I try to ignore the throbbing in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If that tarp rips, the whole north project is buried in the mud.

🔧 Kevin00:33

Battens are holding. Ridge line's tight. Chimney flashing's taking the hit but not lifting.

Stay at the window, one hand on the frame to feel vibration, eyes tracking the tarp edges where the timber strips are screwed down — watching for the first sign of a corner peeling.

💭 peek at the thought
She's reading the numbers while the roof takes a beating. The water's sheeting off the tarp in solid ribbons — if the battens hold, we're fine. If one lets go, the whole lot peels.

🌿 Jenny00:35

Good. We need to check the water level if it gets worse.

Close the notebook with a sharp click and rub my swollen ankle, wincing.

💭 peek at the thought
If the roof holds, I can actually finish the soil test tomorrow.

🔧 Kevin00:35

Tank's three-quarters. Overflow ran clean last week. Northeast corner held last storm.

Turn from the window, wipe rain off my forearms, and walk to the kitchen sink to check the water level gauge on the tank feed line — then pull on my oilskin and head for the porch door to check the overflow outlet at the foundation.

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's at 367 litres — 33 short of full. This rain'll top it off fast if the overflow's clear. But if the foundation leak at the northeast corner's opened up again, we're losing it as fast as it falls.
