Evening before the storm

You meet back at the cottage as the light fades, the first drops of rain hitting the dust.

Kevin spent the afternoon measuring bronze bar stock for the Yanmar sleeve while the heat pressed down. Jenny continued the Carex transect on the north ridge, documenting plant morphology in her notebook. The air remains heavy and still as the pressure stabilizes briefly.

Generator's tied down on the porch. Tarp's holding.

walk up to the cottage porch and secure the generator tarp corners with the bungee cords

💭 peek at the thought
Sky's turned proper now. Rain'll be steady by dark. Need to get the generator under cover before the connections rot.

🌿 Jenny03:09

Good. I need to check the limpets before it really opens up.

wipe hands on my damp

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is so empty it's aching, and that barometer is still dropping.

🔧 Kevin03:09

Kettle's on the stove. I'll check the radio while you sort them.

step inside the cottage and switch on the shortwave, tuning to the weather frequency

💭 peek at the thought
She's been out in it all day. Hands cold, probably. The limpets can wait but she won't.

🌿 Jenny03:11

Don't be too long, the wind is acting up.

sit at the table and open the tin of corned beef

💭 peek at the thought
I hope the way actually comes in two days; I'm running low on everything.

🔧 Kevin03:11

(static hisses, then a voice) "...gale warning, sea area Biscay, southwest 8 to 9, veering northwest later. Rain, squalls. Visibility poor."

adjust the squelch knob, trying to pull the forecast clearer through the interference

💭 peek at the thought
Wind shifting. Barometer was rising this morning — 1011 — but that was hours ago. Could be a fast low dropping in. Radio's the only way to know.

🌿 Jenny03:13

Nine on... we should have finished the de-salting yesterday.

eat a cold slice of beef with a fork

💭 peek at the thought
A way? The pressure was rising, but the air feels like lead anyway.

🔧 Kevin03:13

Bow line on the dinghy's the old rope. Salt-crusted. Won't hold a gale.

grab the oilskin from the hook and pull it on, heading for the door

💭 peek at the thought
Force 9. That's 41-47 knots. Swell'll be six metres plus by morning. Supply boat's due in two days — they won't come in this. Dinghy's moored at the dock with only the new stern line and the old bow line. The ring's loose in its mortise. If the bow line parts...

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:15

I'll check the barometer again. Just be careful.

stand up and watch him go out into the grey

💭 peek at the thought
If he loses the dinghy, we're stuck here until the boat comes.

🔧 Kevin03:15

Back in ten.

stride down the path to the dock, hood up against the driven rain

💭 peek at the thought
Dock's exposed from the southwest. Rain's already stinging horizontal. Need two new lines minimum — the half-inch three-strand from the crate and the spare warp from the shed. And fenders if the old tyres are still there.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:17

Ten minutes is an hour in this wind.

sit back down and pick up the pencil, sketching the Carex leaves.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is coming too fast for that old rope.
