Afternoon Gathering

Kevin meets Jenny at the cottage as the rain begins to taper. The smell of damp earth and salt fills the air, and the tide has just begun to turn.

Kevin heads to the north ridge with the auger to investigate the unstable soil near the clay. Jenny remains at the cottage, meticulously sketching the curve of the erosion line in her notebook while managing her throbbing ankle.

Tank's full. First time in weeks.

Walk onto the porch, wipe boots on the mat, step inside and set the kettle on the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's easing. Tide turning. Good. Means the trench drains. Means I can see what I'm drilling.

The north ridge is turning to soup. My ankle is throbbing.

Jenny pulls her leg out of the salt water, wincing as the weight shifts, and begins sketching the erosion pattern on the stone wall in her notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He talks about the water like a victory while the soil is literally washing away from under the garden.

Kettle's on. Got corned beef broth left.

Pull the tin mug from the shelf, pour the hot broth from the pot on the stove, set it on the table in front of her.

💭 peek at the thought
She walked the ridge on that ankle. In the rain. Twelve meters of trench line. Didn't say a word.

🌿 Jenny18:13

I need to check the pH by the sea cave again tomorrow. The clay is shifting.

Jenny wraps her hands around the warm mug, letting the steam hit her face, and stares at the sketch of the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the broth is warm, but I can't stop thinking about the salt levels.

🔧 Kevin18:15

Take the auger. I'll carry the buckets.

Sit opposite her at the table, roll a cigarette, light it, exhale slow through the nose.

💭 peek at the thought
Clay shifting means the cave wall's moving. Means the whole slope's coming down slow. She'll go anyway.

🌿 Jenny18:17

My ankle won't hold for the ridge today. It's too slick.

Jenny takes a sip of the broth, her eyes fixed on the tin of seeds on the high shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks buckets will fix a drainage problem, but the soil is just too heavy.

🔧 Kevin18:17

I'll go. You map it from the cottage. Radio me if the barometer moves.

Stand, knock the cigarette ash into the tin ashtray, pull the oilskin from the hook by the door.

💭 peek at the thought
She said today. Not tomorrow. Not never. Today.

🌿 Jenny18:19

Be careful. The north ridge is unstable near the clay.

Jenny watches him leave, then turns back to her notebook to sketch the precise curve of the erosion line.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going out there in that soup and the slope is going to give under him.
