Night at the cottage

The pair retreats inside the cottage as the temperature drops and the sound of the tide against the dock grows louder.

The heavy air of the cottage is still, smelling of salt and damp wood. Jenny lies on the kitchen table, her breathing shallow as the fever takes its hold, her ankle swollen and angry beneath the bandage. Kevin returns from the generator shed, the lantern light in his hand casting long shadows against the walls, as he checks the stove to ensure the heat will last through the humid night.

Coffee's still warm if you want it. I'll bank the stove.

walk to the wood stove, add two split spruce rounds, adjust the damper to slow the burn, then move to the generator shed to check the oil level and wipe down the new carburetor diaphragm housing

💭 peek at the thought

The air's turned cold fast. Good wood for the stove, at least. Need to check the generator oil before bed — it's been running steady but the diaphragm's new and I don't trust new parts till they've done fifty hours.

Don't stay up too late in the shed.

Jenny leans back against the kitchen table, resting her swollen ankle on a stool, and opens her notebook to the unfinished sketch of the sea

💭 peek at the thought

My ankle is throbbing in time with the tide, and the fever is making the edges of the room blur.

Won't be long. Just the oil and the diaphragm bolts.

step out the porch door into the cool night air, cross to the generator shed, pull the dipstick and wipe it clean, reinsert and read the level, then check the four carburetor mounting bolts with a 10mm wrench

💭 peek at the thought

She's watching me the way she used to watch the horizon — like she's memorizing the shape of me before something takes it. Ankle's still bad. She won't say.

🌿 Jenny03:23

Be careful with the light in the shed.

Jenny traces the veins of the sea beet leaf in her sketch with a pencil, her hand shaking slightly from the fever.

💭 peek at the thought

The smell of salt and woodsmoke is the only thing keeping me grounded while the island feels so heavy and hungry.

🔧 Kevin03:25

Light's fine. New mantle on the lantern.

finish tightening the last carburetor bolt, close the generator shed door, pause with hand on the porch rail listening to her breathing through the kitchen window, then go back inside and set the lantern on the table beside her notebook

💭 peek at the thought

She's burning up. The shake in her hand isn't from the cold. Metronidazole course finished yesterday — maybe the doxycycline isn't enough alone. Should've pushed harder for the evacuation when the radio raised the coastguard. Pride kills more sailors than storms.

🌿 Jenny03:26

Thanks. I'm almost done with this.

Jenny closes the notebook with a soft thud and rubs her eyes, wincing as the weight shifts on her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought

The light from the lantern makes the shadows dance on the stone walls like moving kelp in the tide.
