Waiting in the Mist

The fog remains thick as the tide rises against the dock piles. Kevin brings fresh water to Jenny, checking her temperature again while the radio sits silent.

The air in the cottage is heavy with humidity and the scent of woodsmoke and medicinal sea beet. Jenny lies in the bunk, her breathing shallow and labored as the fever battles against the infection in her ankle. Kevin sits quietly in the chair beside her, watching the barometer needle continue its slow descent while listening to the rhythmic drip of the leak from the window shutter into a bucket.

I'm fine, Kevin. way let me sleep for an hour.

Pull the blanket up to my chin and wince as the fabric brushes the infected skin.

💭 peek at the thought
My head is a drum and my leg feels like it's being eaten by salt water. If that boat doesn't come in three days, I'm going to be part of the compost.

Hour. Then I'm checking again. Water's here if you wake thirsty.

set the tin mug on the bedside table, pull the chair back, and sit with the radio log to wait out the hour

💭 peek at the thought
She's burning up and she knows it. The way she flinched at the blanket tells me more than the thermometer will. But she's stubborn and I'm not arguing with a sick woman who needs rest.

way. I'll try to be quiet.

Close my eyes and try to focus on the pulse in my ankle instead of the heat in my skull.

💭 peek at the thought
way's too good to me for being this mess of fever and infection. I can't even hold a pencil right now without it shaking.

🔧 Kevin03:43

(nothing — just a slow exhale, settling into the chair)

open the radio log to a fresh page, pencil ready, and glance at the barometer on the shelf — 1014 and falling slow

💭 peek at the thought
She's already fading. Good. Sleep's the only thing'll knock this fever back now. The radio's quiet on all three frequencies — supply boat's still hours out at best. I'll watch the barometer and the tide both.

🌿 Jenny03:45

Jenny — drift into a shallow, feverish sleep, the rhythm of the wood stove the only sound in the room.

💭 peek at the thought
The fog is like wool against the glass, just like my brain. If I can't get the pH right, those seeds will just rot in the dirt.

🔧 Kevin03:45

Kevin — rise quiet, lay a fresh split on the fire, and return to the chair — keeping one eye on the barometer, one on her breathing

💭 peek at the thought
The stove's eating wood faster than I'd like. If the boat's delayed another tide cycle, I'll need to split more spruce rounds before dark. But that means leaving her side, and the fever could spike while I'm out there.

🌿 Jenny03:47

(nothing, eyes closed, jaw clenched against the headache)

Shift uncomfortably on the cot, the ankle brace digging into my skin, and reach for the seed tin on the shelf without opening it.

💭 peek at the thought
way's watching the barometer like it might fall in love with him. Good. Better him than the storm finding us unprepared.

🔧 Kevin03:47

(soft, barely a whisper) Tin's not going anywhere.

slide the tin closer to her fingertips on the shelf, then settle back — pencil hovering over the log page, waiting

💭 peek at the thought
Even in fever she reaches for the seeds. The tin's become a talisman — or maybe it's the only thing on this island that feels like tomorrow. Her fingers found it blind. That tells me something about where her head lives when the pain takes over.
