Evening Meal and Assessment

The rain has slowed to a drizzle as Kevin and Jenny gather around the stove to eat, the smell of salted shellfish filling the small room.

The rain has turned into a heavy driving lashing, drumming against the cottage roof. Outside, the low tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick rocks of the southern pools, though the wind and spray make movement along the shore treacherous.

Kevin — eat limpets from plate, chew slowly, watch Jenny from corner of eye

💭 peek at the thought
The limpets are ready, steam curling off the plates. I watch Jenny lift her fork—her movements careful, deliberate. She hasn’t said a word since we sat down. I don’t push. I just eat, slow, letting the silence sit between us like it belongs there.

I'm fine, Kevin. Just eat.

Push the plate of limpets toward him, flinching slightly as the bandage rubs against the swollen skin.

Alright.

take plate Jenny pushed, set it in front of me, eat limpets without looking up, jaw tight, listening to the rain on the roof

💭 peek at the thought
She says she’s fine, but her hand trembles pushing the plate—like the motion costs her. I don’t believe her. I never do when she says it like that. But I don’t argue. I just take the plate, let the weight of it settle in my hands.

🌿 Jenny05:07

The tide is out far enough. I should check the traps tomorrow.

Reach for the notebook, flipping to a clean page to sketch the sea beet salt Analysis I found earlier.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so quiet when he's brooding. It's worse than the talking.

🔧 Kevin05:09

Kevin — wipe mouth with back of hand, stand slowly, take empty plates to sink, rinse them in seawater bucket without speaking, leave them to drain on counter, return to chair but don’t sit—just lean against wall, arms crossed, watching her sketch i

💭 peek at the thought
She’s already planning tomorrow’s work like the pain isn’t there—like if she keeps her hands moving, she won’t have to feel it. I want to tell her to rest, but I know she’ll just say she’s fine again. So I say nothing. Instead, I watch the way her pencil hovers over the page, not quite touching it.
