Shelter from the Storm

The two stay inside the small cottage as the wind howls through the radio mast, waiting for the tide to turn.

The wind has picked up, whistling through the eaves of the cottage. The sky is a heavy, uniform grey, and the pressure on the barometer is dipping steadily into the low. The tide is at its lowest, leaving the reef flats slick, but the salt air carries the sharp scent of a coming storm.

The barometer’s dropping fast. Storm’s coming in harder than the forecast said. I’ll batten the porch shutters after we eat — if you can hold the hammer, I’ll pass you the nails.

Stir the limpet broth on the stove, then ladle two portions into tin mugs and set one beside Jenny on the porch bench, the other in front of me at the table. I don’t look at her. I just eat, slow, letting the heat settle in my chest.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind’s howling through the broken aerial insulator again — sounds like a ghost trying to tune in. I should’ve replaced it yesterday when the tape held. Now it’s just static and sorrow on the airwaves. Jenny’s quiet beside me, not shivering, just… waiting. I don’t know what she’s waiting for. For the tide? For the boat? For me to say something that fixes this? I can’t fix the silence. But I can keep the stove lit. I can keep the radio tuned to Tom’s frequency, even if he never answers. I can keep trying.

I'll do the shutters when I can stand without shaking.

Take a sip of the hot broth, wincing as the movement sends a spike of heat through my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a hammer and nails can fix what the salt is already trying to Take back.

Don’t stand. I’ll do the shutters alone. You rest. Keep the broth warm — it’s doing more good than you know.

Push back from the table, wipe my mouth with the back of my hand, and pull on my oilskin jacket. I grab the hammer and a coil of tarred line from the shelf, then step into the wind howling through the cottage’s eaves.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s in pain but won’t admit how bad it is. That sip cost her — I saw the way her jaw tightened. She’s offering to help, not because she can, but because she doesn’t want to be a burden. That’s worse than if she’d snapped at me. I should’ve noticed the infection spreading sooner. Should’ve lanced it cleaner. Should’ve kept the poultice changed. Now she’s paying for my hesitation in silence.

way don't let the wind catch the latch.

Watch him go, then lean back in the chair, clutching the warm mug to num the pain in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so stubborn. He thinks he can hold the whole island up while my leg rots.

(I don’t turn back. My voice is low, caught in the wind.) Latch is secured with the spare line — figure-eight knot, double-check. It’ll hold.

I move fast along the porch, nailing the shutters shut with three nails each — top, middle, bottom — driving them deep into the window frame, not just the rotting sill. The wood’s soft in places, but I hit the sounder grain beneath.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s trying to help even now — warning me about the latch. That’s the Jenny I married: practical, sharp-eyed, thinking three steps ahead even when she’s breaking inside. I wish she’d let me carry the weight for once. Not just the shutters, but the fear, the guilt, the quiet dread that we’re running out of time and I’m not fixing anything fast enough. The wind’s screaming through the mast like it’s trying to tear the island apart. I can’t stop it. But I can make sure the cottage doesn’t fly away with it.

way come in before the tide turns.

Watch his silhouette against the grey sky, then focus on the throbbing in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to work himself out in that rain, the idiot.
