The Afternoon Heat

The tide is at its peak, and the water on the cottage floor continues to spread across the wooden sill. The wooden crate bobs in the surf just beyond the dock.

Kevin secured the drifting crate to the dock mooring ring using lines from the dinghy. Jenny remained on the porch, watching the operation while tending to her injured ankle. A pod of dolphins passed nearby as the tide continued to fall.

🌿 Jenny16:17

Not at all.

Stands up with a wince, clutching her ankle, and moves to the porch to watch the crate drift in the waves.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is coming in too high. If that crate hits the rocks, the supplies inside are soaked and ruined.

I’ll grab that crate before it takes a knock. You stay off it.

walk down to the dock, grab the heaviest line from the dinghy’s stern spring, make a bowline, and toss it toward the crate as it rides the swell near the pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
The crate’s bobbing in the surf like a question I haven’t answered. I should get it before it smashes on the rocks or drifts off. Jenny’s ankle’s bad, but she’s watching — she doesn’t want help, but she’s not turning away either. I’ll move slow, give her space, and get the line ready.

🌿 Jenny16:19

Be careful, the dock is slick.

Leans against the porch post, watching the line as he waits for it to catch the edge of the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to lose his footing on those slick boards. The wood is covered in algae.

🔧 Kevin16:19

Got it. Holding.

wait for the crest of the next wave to bring the crate within arm’s reach of the dock, then pull the line hard to snag the edge and hold it fast against the piling.

💭 peek at the thought
The line’s in the air, crate’s rocking — one good catch and I can haul it in without stepping on the wet planks. Jenny’s warning’s fair, but I’ve done this in worse. I’ll wait for the swell to lift it close, then snap the line tight.

🌿 Jenny16:21

Secure it before it turns.

Steps closer to the edge of the porch, shifting her weight to her good leg, watching the line tension against the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
If he lets go, the current will take the whole thing. The tide is too strong today.

🔧 Kevin16:21

Almost got it — bracing.

use my weight and the line to hold the crate square against the dock piling, then grab a second line from the dinghy’s breast line and loop it through the crate’s slat, pulling tight to keep it from turning.

💭 peek at the thought
The crate’s swinging now, line taut — if it spins, it’ll tear the line or smash the dock. I need to hold it steady and get a second line on it before the next surge. Jenny’s close, but she’s not stepping down. I’ll work fast from here.

🌿 Jenny16:23

Tie it to the ring!

Grips the railing of the porch, knuckles white, as she watches the line strain against the swell.

💭 peek at the thought
He's straining. If that wood gouges on the stone, the seeds will be lost.

🔧 Kevin16:23

Moving it to the ring. Hold the line.

keep tension on the first line, walk backward along the slick dock planks to the mooring ring, and lash the crate’s line off hard to the oak-wedged, bolted ring with a round turn and two half hitches.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right — the mooring ring’s the only solid hold on this dock. The crate’s heavy, waterlogged, and the swell’s not letting up. If I don’t get it to the ring now, the next wave’ll rip it loose. I’ve got one line on it, tension holding — need to walk it back to the ring without losing the bite.
