Afternoon Rationing

The rain continues its steady rhythm as the water tank reaches its brim. The newly recovered tins sit on the kitchen table, safe from the leaking shutter.

Kevin and Jenny inspected the water tank's overflow channel while the rain continued. Kevin checked the tension on the straps while Jenny used a wire brush and headlamp to clear the pipe. Both failed to clear the significant blockage, leaving the water to saturate the cottage foundation.

Crate's emptied. Tins dry. Coffee's sealed — that'll keep.

wipe down the last tin with a rag and set it with the others on the shelf

Good haul. Six tins corned beef, coffee, rope, fishing gear. She catalogued it all while I hauled. Hands steady now.

Go on then. I'll finish here and check the tank straps while you're at it.

I'll check the copper pipe. If it's clogged, I'll have to use the wire brush.

Walk to the back of the cottage and inspect the 400-litre tank's overflow outlet.

💭 peek at the thought
The tank is full, but if that overflow isn't clear, the kitchen is going to be a swamp. My ankle is throbbing.

Wire brush is in the shed. Take the headlamp — it's dark under the eaves.

I'll grab the brush and the light. I'll be back in a minute.

Go to the shed for the wire brush and headlamp, then inspect the overflow outlet.

💭 peek at the thought
It's dark under there and I need to see exactly what's blocking the flow. My ankle is killing me with every step.

run a hand along the tank straps, testing tension, and peer at the overflow outlet where the copper pipe meets the tank wall

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's full to the brim. Straps look tight but the west corner buckle's worn. Need to replace it before the next blow.

I'm getting the gear.

Walk to the shed to retrieve the wire brush and headlamp, then return to the tank.

💭 peek at the thought
If that pipe is blocked by silt, the whole kitchen is just going to go under. I need to clear it before the rain picks up again.
