Pre-storm Calm

The low tide begins to turn as the heavy heat remains. The supply boat is three days away.

Kevin attempted to align the south piling sister brace, but the oppressive heat made the work sluggish and precision difficult. Jenny tended to her ankle at home, noting the persistent swelling as the barometer continues to drop. The air remains heavy and still, signaling an approaching change in the weather.

🔧 Kevin06:42

Kevin — walk to the dock with tools and greenheart offcuts to finish the south piling sister brace before the tide turns.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat's not breaking. Barometer's steady at 987 but that humidity says it's building, not clearing. Three days to the supply boat — if she shows. Need the south piling brace done before the next spring tide pushes water over the dock decking. And I still haven't written Tom's letter proper.

Kevin, watch the alignment on that brace—the current is going to pull it out.

Reach for the way, squeeze the excess moisture from the poultice, and sketch the angry red lines creeping up my calf.

💭 peek at the thought
The infection is pulsing in time with my heart; if the fever doesn't break soon, I won't be able to walk the north slope tomorrow.

Holding it. Just need the second bolt through.

Drive the 150mm stainless through-bolt through the pre-drilled sister knee into the sound piling core, washer and nyloc on the back side, torque it down with the 19mm wrench while bracing the greenheart offcut against the current.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Current's already nudging the offcut. If I don't pin it before the epoxy kicks, the whole sister shifts. She's watching the leg too — tracking lines. Good. Means she's still tracking.

It's tight enough, don't over- Calculation the wood.

Lean back against the whitewashed stone and hiss as a wave of pain shoots through my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If that bolt shears, the whole dock goes, just like my leg feels right now.

🔧 Kevin06:46

Bolt's seated. Back off.

Ease off the wrench, check the sister brace alignment by sighting down the piling, then pack tools and greenheart offcuts to move back toward the cottage before the tide covers the work.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right on the bolt — nyloc's seated, any more and I'll crush the greenheart fibres. Her ankle's talking louder than the dock. Tide's coming in fast; got maybe twenty minutes before the water's over the decking. Finish the brace, then look at the leg.

🌿 Jenny06:47

I'm coming in.

Limp back to the porch, drop the grit from my hands, and look at the tin of seeds on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping again; the air feels like wet wool pressed against my face.

🔧 Kevin06:48

Kettle's on. Sit.

Follow her onto the porch, set the tool bag down, and pull the tin mug from the hook to fill from the kettle for her.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slow. The limp's deeper than this morning. Tide's lapping the lower dock planks now — brace held. Good. Need to check the tracking on her calf, reapply poultice if the heat's back. And the seed tin's open on the table. She's looking at it like it matters.

🌿 Jenny06:49

Thanks.

way on the porch chair, lift the swollen ankle onto a crate, and watch the barometer needle shiver.

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't see the way the skin is shiny and tight; he just sees the dock.
