Midday storm approaches

The rain has intensified into a heavy downpour. The wind is now coming steadily from the northeast, shaking the cottage shutters. Kevin and Jenny must decide if the seeds are moved inside before the pressure hits ninety.

The air is thick and stagnant, the 28°C heat pressing down on the island as the barometer continues its slow rise to 988 hPa. The tide is out, exposing the slick, weed-strewn rocks of the tide pools.

🌿 Jenny06:35

Kevin, leave the generator! The barometer is crashing and we need to get the seeds into the kitchen now. I don't care about the tarps—the tin is more important, just move!

Grabs the tin of seeds and the dry sketches, wraps them tightly in her waterproof notebook, and limps toward the kitchen, bracing the doorframe against the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast—982 hPa and still falling. If it hits ninety, the surge will rip the garden wall right out. way grandmother’s tin is sitting on the bench, exposed to the salt spray; if those seeds get wet, the last eleven months were for nothing. I can't let the wind take them, but my own is screaming with every movement.

🔧 Kevin06:35

Moving.

Drop the wrench, grab the spare tarp and the heirloom seed packets from the shed shelf, and follow Jenny to the cottage kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Barometer's dropping fast, northeast wind means surge on the south side. Generator shed can take a beating — the tin can't.

🌿 Jenny06:37

Put them on the table, away from the window. We need to check the seal on the tin one more time.

Jenny clears a space on the wood table, sets the wrapped tin in the center, and begins to re-wrap the bandage on her ankle, hands shaking slightly from the pain.

💭 peek at the thought
He's finally moving, but the wind is howling through the gaps now. If the shutters fail, the salt spray will ruin the sketches in the notebook. I need to keep the tin dry, but my ankle feels like it's being worked with hot irons.

🔧 Kevin06:37

Seal looked clean when we packed it. Desiccant still blue?

Set the spare tarp and seed packets on the table beside the tin, pull the chair out for her, and crouch to check the tin's lid seal with my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
Her hands are shaking. Pain's spiking again. Tin seal held through the last storm but salt eats everything eventually.

🌿 Jenny06:39

It's blue, I think. Just don't open it yet—the air is too heavy in here. Wait for the pressure to stabilize.

Jenny leans back the chair, exhaling a sharp breath as she shifts her weight, and watches the rain lashes the windowpaw.

💭 peek at the thought
If the desiccant is pink, we're doomed, but the humidity in this room is already rising. I can't see the color properly with the light flickering, and the throbbing in my leg is masking everything.

🔧 Kevin06:39

Kettle's on the stove. Want broth?

Fill the kettle from the tank, set it on the wood stove, and pull the tin mug from the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
Pressure's still dropping. She's reading the room same as me — don't break a good seal until the air settles. Her ankle's taking the weather hard.

🌿 Jenny06:41

Just the broth. Whatever has salt.

Jenny nods weakly, resting her swollen ankle on a stool, and watches the barometer needle continue its descent.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm starving, but the heat is what I need. If the barometer keeps dropping, I won't even be able to walk to the north slope tomorrow.

🔧 Kevin06:41

Limpet broth it is.

Ladle hot broth from the pot on the stove into the tin mug, set it on the table within her reach, and sit opposite her with my own mug.

💭 peek at the thought
Salt broth. Limpet stock still on the stove from breakfast. Good — replaces what the fever's burning off. Barometer's at 984 and falling. Northeast wind backing west by nightfall if the pattern holds. Dock's south brace still isn't done.
