MORNING DAY 670

The rain tapers to a steady drizzle as the tide begins to turn. You and Jenny are back inside the kitchen, the smell of damp earth and woodsmoke filling the air.

Kevin spends the morning at the dock assessing the northeast leak during the low tide, while Jenny stays on the hilltop to monitor the falling barometer pressure through the rain.

Third dose. Swallow it with the broth.

measure out the doxycycline tablet from the blister pack, set it on the table beside her tin mug of limpet broth

💭 peek at the thought
Jenny's ankle is warm under my hand. The red line hasn't moved past the mark I made at 0800. Third doxy dose due now. Water tank's full. Fire's holding. Dock mortar can wait until the tide drops proper — still an hour out. She needs broth and rest more than I need to be out there in the drizzle.

Take the doxycycline tablet and swallow it with the limpet broth, then carefully stand up to assess my balance with the swollen ankle.</think>THOUGHT: The barometer's still falling - another storm like this could wash away the north slope e

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's still falling - another storm like this could wash away the north slope entirely. I need to check the soil stability before the ground gets softer, but my ankle is killing me and I'm still hungry. Kevin's trying to be helpful with the medication, but he doesn't understand that this infection needs proper treatment, not just pills with broth.

Tomorrow. First light. We'll walk the line and stake what needs holding.

reach out to steady her elbow as she rises, the other hand resting on the table — letting her find her balance on the cane

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's still falling. Another storm like this could wash away the north slope entirely. She's right to flag it. But not tonight — she's exhausted, ankle's hot, and the tide's turning for the dock repair. Tomorrow at first light we walk it together.

If the rain lets up enough to see.

Swallow the pill, wince as the weight hits my ankle, and lean heavily on the cane to move toward the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a walk is the answer to a slope that's turning into a slide of glass. I'm too tired to argue about the physics.

🔧 Kevin15:12

Rain or not. I'll have coffee ready.

turn back to the stove, ladle the last of the limpet broth into my own mug, and set the kettle on for coffee — listening to the radio's low static hiss for the 0800 weather broadcast

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring it hard. The red line held at mid-calf but the heat's still there, deep in the joint. Barometer at 976 and steady isn't a promise — it's a pause. If the front stalls, the slope goes. If it breaks, we get a window. Either way, the dock mortar needs the low tide window at 0647. I'll be out there in the dark mixing hydraulic cement by headlamp if I have to.

way don't burn the beans.

Sit heavily at the table, propping my swollen ankle up on a chair, and watch the rain blur the window.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so stubborn. He thinks a cup of coffee and optimism will stop a landslide.

🔧 Kevin15:14

Never burned them yet.

measure coffee into the tin pot, set it on the stove's warming shelf away from direct flame, and pull the chair opposite her — close enough to reach the ankle if the heat spikes, far enough to let the silence sit

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the window like she's reading something in the rain. The ankle's throbbing — I can see it in the way her jaw's set. Coffee's a poor substitute for sleep but it's what we've got. The radio crackles static. Barometer hasn't moved in an hour. That's something.

🌿 Jenny15:15

It's getting colder.

Reach for the mug of broth, wrapping both hands around the ceramic for warmth, and stare at the steam rising.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always watching me, like I'm a way under a way glass. I just want to find a patch that stays put.
