The Wait for the Storm

The rain begins to fall in earnest, turning the overcast afternoon into a grey roar. The tide continues to rise against the dock pilings.

Kevin replaced the Yanmar raw water impeller, checking the new vanes for pitting before bolting the housing back down. Jenny lunged into the garden with the heavy tarp, battling the wind to shield the tomato seedlings from the sudden downpour before heading back to the cottage.

🔧 Kevin08:33

Kevin — walk to the workshop bench, pick up the Yanmar raw water pump housing, and inspect the impeller housing bore and vane channels for pitting or scoring under the bench light.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's settling in. Good cover to test the Yanmar without the noise carrying. Need to check the impeller housing while it's still cold — pitting there means the whole raw water side's compromised.

🌿 Jenny08:37

The rain's getting heavy. I need to check the garden after this—those seedlings might drown.

walk to window and look at dock pilings check water level in tank by feeling the dipstick through the access panel in the wall retrieve notebook from shelf and write "ankle pain + rain = slower work today" on page 34 prepare to leave cottag

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is coming down hard now, and I can hear it hitting the tin roof like nails. Kevin's moving toward the workshop with the pump housing—good, he's checking for damage I can't see in these dim conditions. My ankle throbs with each step, and I realize I haven't eaten since dawn. The tide is rising faster than it should, and I'm starting to worry about the dock pilings.

🔧 Kevin08:37

Tank's full. Rain'll keep it that way. Take the radio if you go — squall could cut visibility to nothing.

Set the pump housing down, pick up the spare impeller, and compare the vane profiles side by side — checking the new one for any casting flaws before I seat it.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving stiff. Ankle's slowing her more than she'll say. Tank's fine — 397 litres, rain'll top it. Should run the Yanmar test before the light goes, but not while she's out in the downpour.

🌿 Jenny08:43

I'll take it. If I'm not back in an hour, stay by the stove.

grab the handheld radio from the shelf and tuck it into my belt loop; step out onto the porch into the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the visibility. If I can't see the shore, I can't navigate the ridge. My tackle is screaming, but the garden won't watch itself.

🔧 Kevin08:43

Hour. I'll have the kettle on.

Return to the Yanmar, seat the new impeller into the housing with a thin smear of marine grease on the shaft, and torque the cover plate bolts to spec — 6Nm, criss-cross pattern.

💭 peek at the thought
An hour in this rain with that ankle. She'll push it. Radio's charged — checked it yesterday. Better she has it than me.

🌿 Jenny08:45

Jenny — walk down the porch steps toward the garden, shielding my face with my arm.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is a wall now. I can't even see the edge of the garden. My ankle is throbbing with every step, but those seedlings will be washed away.

🔧 Kevin08:45

Kevin — mount the raw water pump back on the Yanmar block, reconnect the inlet and outlet hoses with new clamps, prime the raw water side from the bucket, and hit the starter.

💭 peek at the thought
She's gone. Rain's loud enough to cover the test run. Good. Engine first, then the letter to Tom while it warms.

🌿 Jenny08:47

Jenny — kneel in the mud near the garden expansion, checking the soil around the tomato seedlings.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is turning cold. I can't see the north ridge anymore, let alone the Carex. My ankle is swollen against the brace.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:47

Kevin — pull the dry bag from the loft ladder, take out the sealed letter to Tom, and set it on the kitchen table. Then grab the notebook and pen, sit at the table, and write a fresh one — short, true, no excuses — while the Yanmar warms.

💭 peek at the thought
Engine caught first turn. Idle's clean, no vibration at 800 RPM. Raw water pumping steady — good stream out the exhaust. Let it warm ten minutes, then load test. Letter to Tom while it runs.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:49

I need to check the shade cloth.

grab the heavy tarp from the porch and lunge toward the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is too loud to think. If those seedlings go, the whole season is a waste. My ankle is a hot wire.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:50

Jenny — wait. The wind'll take you with that tarp. Let me.

Kill the Yanmar, wipe hands on the rag, and move to the porch door to follow her out.

💭 peek at the thought
Shade cloth anchors shredded by the crab last week. She's running on a bad ankle in mud with a tarp. Wind'll catch it like a sail.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:51

I've got it! Just hold the edge!

lunge into the garden, the tarp snapping like a whip, to reach for the tomato rows.

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't understand how fast the wind shifts here. If the tarp catches a gust, it's way into the surf.
