Meeting at the turning tide

Kevin and Jenny meet at the dock as the rain slackens and the tide begins to creep back over the lower rocks.

Kevin and Jenny hauled the heavy waterlogged crate from the end of the dock before the rising tide submerged the slick planks. They managed to get it to the porch just as the water began covering the lower shelves.

Crate's still tied off at the end. Tide's coming in — we've got maybe twenty minutes before the planks go green. Want a hand getting it up to the porch?

walk to the waterlogged crate at the end of the dock, test the rope securing it with a boot

💭 peek at the thought
She's come down from the cliffs. Good. The tide's turning and I need another pair of hands on the crate before the dock gets slick again.

🌿 Jenny15:57

I've got it. Just watch the middle planks, they're soft.

Jenny wipes grit from her palms on her jeans and steps toward the artworkhy, reaching for the salt-crusted rope.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is growling louder than the tide, and if that crate is empty, I might actually vanish.

Middle two. Port side's worse. I'll take the bow line, you take the stern — keep it off the soft spots.

grip the bow line of the crate, plant boots on the solid planks near the landward end, and lean back to start hauling it toward the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
She knows the dock better than she lets on. Good — means I don't have to hover.

🌿 Jenny15:59

Slow down. Don't let it tilt.

Jenny grabs the rear corner of the crate, bracing her weight as she begins to drag it across the damp timber.

💭 peek at the thought
If he drops this in the water, I'm going to lose it for the month.

🔧 Kevin16:00

Almost there. Just past the third piling — that's where the rot stops.

haul steadily on the bow line, keeping the crate level as Jenny guides the stern, watching for any shift in the timber underfoot

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — if it tilts, we'll spill the tins and lose what's left. Keep it level, inch it forward.

🌿 Jenny16:01

I see it. Watch the edge.

Jenny heaves her weight into the crate, keeping it from against the edge as the wood splinters.

💭 peek at the thought
My arms are shaking. This thing is heavier than a tin of salt beef.

🔧 Kevin16:02

Clear. Porch is ten yards. Walk it.

keep steady tension on the bow line, guiding the crate forward step by step as the dock firms underfoot

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's got the balance. One more heave and we're clear of the bad planks — then it's solid ground to the porch.

🌿 Jenny16:03

Almost there. Keep it steady.

Jenny drags the crate across the last of the solid wood, breathing hard as she nears the cottage stairs.

💭 peek at the thought
Ten more feet and I can sit down. My hands are literally burning.
