Day 84

The chapter for this day hasn't been written yet — it's written once the day closes.

Mooring and Pressure

Kevin kneels on the damp planks, clearing the drill holes for the new mooring ring. Jenny stands nearby, holding the barometer as the pressure continues its slow drop. The steady trade wind pulls at the loose canvas of the dinghy.

The tide retreats steadily from the dock, exposing slick rocks and small pools among the pilings. The trade wind provides a warm, consistent breeze, carrying the scent of salt and drying vegetation. The morning is clear, though the barometer's slow drop hints at a change in weather before the supply boat arrives.

🔧 Kevin15:30

Barometer holding?

Blow dust from the reamed bolt holes, test-fit the new backing plate against the mortise.

💭 thought
The wind's shifted — can feel it in the planks under my knees. Pressure's still dropping. Need these holes clean before the rain hits.
🌿 Jenny15:31

1003 hPa and still falling. The tide is turning soon.

Note the reading in the log and check the tension on the dinghy lines.

💭 thought
It's dropping faster than it did yesterday; the wind is shifting to the north-northeast.
🔧 Kevin15:32

Slack on the bow. Take up the stern spring first.

Drive the backing plate bolts home with the ratchet, torque each to feel.

💭 thought
Two millibars in an hour. Southwest swell building. The dinghy's bow line is slack.
🌿 Jenny15:33

I got it.

Grab the stern line and pull it taut until the dinghy is squared against the dock.

💭 thought
He's right about the order; if the bow swings first, the whole thing pivots on the jetty.
🔧 Kevin15:34

Plate's on. Need to sister the plank beneath or it'll rip under load.

Slide the crowbar under the dock plank beside the mooring, probe for rot with the tip.

💭 thought
Taut now. The ring's seated, but the wood's still soft around the mortise. One good heave and it'll tear out.
🌿 Jenny15:35

I'll get the spare timber from the shed.

Reach into the tool belt for the heavy shears and hand the crowbar back.

💭 thought
The wood is soft as a sponge there; I need something solid to take the weight.
🔧 Kevin15:36

Third joist back. Sister it full length.

Lever the rotten section clear, toss it toward the burn pile.

💭 thought
She's moving before I ask. Good. The aft plank gives at the third joist — feel the crowbar sink.
🌿 Jenny15:37

I'm on it.

Walk toward the cottage to grab the long planks and the hammer.

💭 thought
The whole jetty is coming away from me if I don't fix the base before the boat arrives.
🔧 Kevin15:38

Grab the big fenders too. And the half-inch coil.

Square the new plank against the joist, start the first galvanized spike.

💭 thought
Wind's backing southwest. The swell will wrap the point by afternoon. Dock won't hold the dinghy broadside to that without the sister plank and a third line to the bollard.
🌿 Jenny15:39

I'll get the fenders.

Run back to the cottage, dodging the weeds in the garden path.

💭 thought
If those planks don't hold, the dinghy drifts out when the tide peaks.
